David A. Butler, age 79, of Acton, Massachusetts, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Life Care Center of Littleton. He was the husband of 55 years to Ethel (Sawtell) Butler.
David Arthur Butler was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on June 8, 1944, the son of the late Arthur S. and Irene (Yurtin) Butler. David graduated from Stratford High School and, in 1967, enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era. He was deployed four times over two years on the USS John Marshall Submarine. He was honorably discharged in 1970. David continued in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 25 years, retiring as Captain.
David and Ethel married on December 16, 1967, in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and soon made their home in Acton, where he was involved in coaching youth soccer, youth basketball, and youth baseball and served as treasurer for ten years for the AB Youth Soccer program. He also served on the Town of Acton Finance Committee and Water Supply District.
David graduated from Boston University, earning a Bachelor of Science and a master’s degree in finance. He began a long and distinguished career as Chief Financial Officer for several companies, including Sequoia System and Biopure Corporation.
Family was the center of his life; David enjoyed holidays, birthdays, and many other celebrations and milestones. David was also an avid fly fisherman, where he found peace and solace regularly with his son and grandson.
Along with his wife Ethel, he is survived by his children, Katharine Nesta and husband Craig of Newton, Jonathan Butler and wife Trinidad of Acton, Andrew Butler and his fiancé Ashley Carter of Concord, and Hillary Lindquist and husband Michael of Brunswick, MD. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Spencer Nesta, Elisabeth Nesta, Emma Butler, Adelaide Butler, Hayden, Ruth, Gwyneth, Nash Butler and Lucy Lindquist.
Services for Captain David A. Butler will be held in the spring of 2024 at a date, time, and location to be announced. Burial with U.S. Navy Military Honors at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Acton, Massachusetts, will be private.
