David H. Donald

Two-time Pulitzer Prize Winner David Herbert Donald, 88, of Lincoln, died on May 17, 2009 in Boston, MA at Beth Israel Medical Center He was the husband of Aida (DiPace) Donald and the father of Bruce R. Donald of Chapel Hill, NC.

Born in Goodman, Mississippi on October 1, 1920, he was the son of the late Ira and Sue Ella (Belford) Donald. A Civil War historian and prolific author with more than 30 books to his name, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned his PhD in 1945 under James G. Randall at the University of Illinois, and embarked on a long, distinguished career in academia.

Mr. Donald’s biographies of Thomas Wolfe and Charles Sumner, earned him the two Pulitzers. He also penned a biography of Abraham Lincoln and a revision of the Randall textbook, Civil War and Reconstruction. His first book, Lincoln's Herndon, written in 1948, was a biography of William Herndon, the junior partner in Abraham Lincoln's law firm in Springfield, Illinois.

Mr. Donald taught at Columbia University, Johns Hopkins and Harvard University, as well as Smith College, the University of North Wales, Princeton University, and University College London. He served as Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. At Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and Harvard Mr. Donald trained graduate students including Jean H. Baker, William J. Cooper, Jr., among others. In addition to his Pulitzers in 1961 and 1988, he received several honorary degrees and served as president of the Southern Historical Association. Donald was the Charles Warren Professor of American History (emeritus from 1991) at Harvard University.
