David Alan Sproul, age 80 and long-time resident of Maynard, formerly of Concord, passed away at home on Saturday, September 6, 2025. He was the husband of 57 years to Janice Graham Sproul.
David was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 28, 1944, and was the son of the late Carl G. and Gertrude M. (Stephens) Sproul. He was raised and educated in Concord, graduating from Concord Carlisle High School. He began his service to his country in the Naval Reserves while still in high school. After graduating, he served from 1964 to 1966 on active duty in the United States Navy. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and attended and graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.
David and Janice married on August 3, 1968, in Concord and settled in Maynard in 1975, where they raised their three children. David worked for many years as an Architectural Engineer for multiple companies, including Raytheon, retiring in 1995.
David was very active with Corinthian Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Concord, where he was a member for over 55 years. He was a Past Master twice. He was also in the Scottish Rite and in the Aleppo Shrine in Wilmington, where he was involved with the Lighting Unit. He was especially proud of his support for the Shriners Institute for Burned and Crippled Children. His dedication to supporting young adults was evident in his role as Dad Advisor to Concord Assembly I.O.R.G. David was also a Past Patron of Hawthorne and Magdalene Chapters, Order of the Eastern Star, for multiple terms. He volunteered countless hours to these organizations.
David liked to travel and had been to Scotland, England, on a cruise to Alaska, and to some of the Caribbean Islands. His deep love of history, especially the Revolutionary War and World War II, inspired many conversations and pursuits throughout his life.
Along with his wife Janice, he is survived by his children Jennifer Carberry and her husband, Sean of Westford, Scott G. Sproul of Leominster, and Jessica Parthree and her husband, Phil of Walpole. Also, his cherished grandchildren, Rhys and Erin Carberry, Gabriella McKnight, and Ryan and Evan Parthree. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Sproul, and his wife, Linda of Stow. His cousin Elizabeth Jones and her husband Steve, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Warren G. Sproul.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember David for visiting hours on Friday, September 12, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap Street, Concord, MA. An Eastern Star and Masonic Service will follow at 7:00 pm. His funeral service will be on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 1:00 pm in the funeral home. Burial with U.S. Navy Honors will follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Concord’s Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Saturday, September 13, 2025, in honor of David’s faithful service in the United States Navy.
