Della “Jean” (Wright) Steward, age 85, of Wayland passed away on Monday, July 6, 2009 at Wayside Hospice in Wayland after a long and brave battle with cancer.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on June 22, 1924 she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Margaret (Hinig) Wright.
Mrs. Steward attended high school and went on to work for the Prudential Insurance Company as a receptionist, her favorite job. She was also an Arthur Murray dance instructor for many years, and dancing was her passion. After starting her family, she taught dancing to housewives in her neighborhood in Concord for many years in the 1950s and ’60s. Mrs. Steward carried this joy into her 80s, leading dance classes for her friends at her Assisted Living residence.
She was married to the late Harry E. Steward in 1949. The couple lived in Cambridge and then moved to Concord, Ma where they lived for many years. After several moves they resettled in Wayland in 1972. Mrs. Steward enjoyed working as a hostess in local restaurants, including The Villa Restaurant in Wayland. She also earned over 1,000 hours as a volunteer for many years at the Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick. Working in the gift shop was her favorite job there.
Mr. and Mrs. Steward retired to Dataw Island, South Carolina in 1989 where Mrs. Steward was an avid golfer. She enjoyed the warmth and sunshine of the coastal community for another fifteen years before returning to Wayland to be near her children.
She is survived by her daughters Janet Murray of Richmond, VA, Nancy Savage of Acton and Sandy Mulrey of Medfield and her six grandchildren : Laura Murray Watkins, Benjamin Savage, Daniel Savage, Andrew Savage, Katie Mulrey, David Mulrey, as well as a great-grandchild, Liza Watkins.
