Edna G. Downes

July 26, 1918 — January 22, 2012

Edna Grace (E.G.) Downes, age 93, of Concord, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Wingate in Sudbury.

Born in Chicago, IL, on July 26, 1918, E.G. was the daughter of Walter E. and Elsie M. (Dixon) Faithorn. Her brother Walter E. Faithorn, Jr. died on November 9th 2011.

Her family moved to Oconomowoc Lake, WI where she would spend her youth, and where she would return, with her husband and children, to spend many delightful summers.

E.G. graduated from Smith College in 1941, later earning a M.Ed. from Northeastern University. She married Prentice G. Downes, a teacher, cartographer and writer, in 1949 and lived in Belmont, MA, where her husband taught at Belmont Hill School. In 1952, they moved to Concord, becoming one of the original residents of the just developed community of Conantum.

When E.G.'s husband died in 1959, she went to work as a remedial reading teacher initially tutoring children in the neighborhood. She later worked in the Lincoln Public Schools, Nashoba Country Day School, and finally in the Carlisle Public Schools until her retirement.

E.G. enjoyed travel, gardening, reading, movie-going, volunteer work, and most of all, being with her family and friends. She is survived by her son, Nicholas S. Downes of Brooklyn, NY, daughter, Anne Downes Catterson of Chicago, IL, nieces Peri Faithorn, Lisa Faithorn and nephew Charles Faithorn.
