Edward M. Curran

June 3, 1929 — April 9, 2023

Concord, Massachusetts

Edward M. Curran, 93, died peacefully at his home in Concord on Sunday, April 9, 2023. He was the beloved husband of 60 years of the late Mary (Grant) Curran.

Edward is survived by his son, Edward Curran, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Centennial, CO and their daughter Dyani and sons Ryan, Tyler, and Dylan; his son Stephen Curran of Quincy, MA and his former wife Karen Curran of Randolph, MA and their daughter Shay and sons Riley and Leo; and his daughter Kathleen Finnegan of Sudbury, MA, her son Devon, and son Connor and his wife Madeleine. Edward was the brother of the late Mary Rossi of Plymouth, MA, the late Sarah (Theresa) Blakely of Woonsocket, RI, and the late John Curran of Holbrook, MA.

Born in Cambridge, MA, Edward (Ed) was the son of the late John and Sarah (Russell) Curran, both natives of Ireland. He was a true Bostonian, graduating from both BC High and Boston College. Ed served his country faithfully as a member of the US Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Together with his beloved “Mae,” they raised their family in Braintree with love and care. He worked in Commercial Insurance throughout his life, first for Sentry Insurance and then several local agencies.

Ed was the rock of both his families; his sisters and brother always knew they could count on “Steady Eddie” for advice and support. He was then the rock of his own family—devoted, reliable, and strong for his wife and children, in good times and bad.

Throughout his life, Ed, together with Mae, enjoyed music (especially big band era) and dancing, camping trips throughout New England, travel to Europe, skiing at Sunday River, and time spent at the family condo in Holderness, NH. His other passions included reading, playing the piano, and card games—especially bridge and poker. One of his greatest joys was playing golf; we celebrated his hole-in-one at the 6th hole of Highland Links in Holderness, even though no one was there to witness it. We know it happened, because he said it did, and he never lied. Ed was a history buff, with a special interest in both the Civil War and WWII. He loved language and word play, deliberately mispronouncing words to amuse himself and others (“catsapostrophe” was a favorite). True to his Irish heritage, Ed had an irrepressible, dry sense of humor, cracking wise with his family and caretakers to the end.

Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Ed for his funeral mass on Thursday, April 13 at 10:00 am at Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord, MA.  Public burial with military honors will take place on Friday, April 14 at 11:00 am at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA.

Concord’s Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Thursday, April 13, 2023 in honor of Edward’s faithful military service.

Dad: Do go gentle into that good night, knowing that your time here was well spent, so admired, greatly appreciated—and will never be forgotten. We know that we were lucky to have you with us for so long. We love you and will miss you always. Kathy, Steve, and Eddie
