Elizabeth Blackall Porter (Betty) age 85 of Concord passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Emerson Hospital. She was the wife of Thomas M. Porter.
Born in Newton on June 10, 1924 she was the daughter of the late Robert M. and Dorothy E. (Brewer) Blackall.
Betty was raised in Milton and graduated from Milton Academy. She later attended Vassar College earning a Bachelor’s Degree. She pursued her love of education and started her teaching career at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge. She taught elementary school for several years and later in life became an educator for several organizations including Massachusetts Audubon and Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, and Garden in the Woods in Framingham.
Betty married and soon she and Tom settled in Concord where she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a long time member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church were she was active in numerous committees. She was a member of the Ladies Tuesday Club and contributed to many causes.
A naturalist, she was passionate about nature, birds, plants, and the preservation of wild places. In her spare time she enjoyed sketching, bird watching and the study of wildlife. She often traveled to area sanctuaries with the Felix Cutler Bird Club. She also attended many classes for the study of Ornithology and Botany. She loved her volunteer work at the New England Wildflower Society’s Garden in the Woods in Framingham, where she was recently honored for over thirty years of dedicated service. She also volunteered in schools helping young children learn to read and study bird behavior.
Along with her loving husband she was the proud mother of Terry Blackall Porter of Orono, Maine, Judith Porter-Muller and her husband, Robert, and daughter, Elizabeth, of Brunswick, Maine and David Marsh Porter, and his wife, Lynn and daughters Megan and Kelly of Westwood, MA. Betty also leaves two sisters, Eleanor B. Read of Mystic, CT and Nancy B. Thompson of Pittsburgh, PA as well as many nieces and nephews.
