Florence J. (Prendergast) Dee

April 27, 1928 — January 3, 2011

Florence J. (Prendergast) Dee, age 82 and lifelong resident of Concord, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late James H. Dee Jr.

Born in Concord on April 27, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. and Gladys (Lawrence) Prendergast who owned and operated Prendergast Market in West Concord for more than forty years.

Educated in Concord, Florence graduated from Concord High School and Mt. Ida College in Newton. At Concord High School, she tended goal for the field hockey team and was catcher on the softball team. In her senior year, she was awarded the Concord High School Good Citizenship Award. She soon married and settled in her hometown of Concord, where together with her husband Jim, raised their seven children.

For over forty years, Florence worked in the Food Service Department and Payroll Department for the Concord Public Schools.

Her greatest pleasures in life centered around her husband and family. She always loved to show her husband’s artistic talent by showing his book entitled Colonial Concord A Study in Pen and Ink, which is still in publication in both book and CD form. Florence loved young people whether it was her own family or the students that she saw each day at school. She made them all a part of her life. Everyone called her “NANA”.

An avid sports fan, Florence enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Patriots and was known to make a wager on a game or two. Other hobbies included Bingo, knitting and an occasional trip to Foxwoods or Aruba. She also enjoyed the beach of Brewster Cape Cod where she had spent her last fifty summers vacationing. She could complete a pair of mittens in an evening or a sweater in a day or two. Those in her world will be a little colder now without her and those garments. She was loved and will be missed by many.

Florence is survived by her loving children, Carol Nutter and her husband Bill of Nashua, NH, James H. Dee III and his wife Barbara of Maynard, Patricia Benenato and her husband Paul of Warwick, RI, Stephan Dee of No. Chelmsford, Brian Dee and his wife Cynthia of Shirley, Francis Dee and his wife Caroline of Sudbury and Peter Dee and his wife Carolyn of Acton. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and her brother Thomas Prendergast and his wife Dorothy of Bedford.
