Helen Jean (Howick) Mears age 87 of Concord passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in West Newton. She was the wife of the late Frederick W. Mears.
Mrs. Mears was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on November 7, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Fan Howick. Raised and educated in Muncie, Indiana, she was granted a full scholarship to Mount Holyoke College at the age of 16. She graduated with high honors and a degree in Philosophy, in 1943.
She met her husband at a college mixer and they married just before he went to fight in WWII. While he was in the Navy, Helen worked as a cryptologist (also for the Navy) in Washington, DC. They moved to Concord in 1948.
While residing in Concord, Mrs. Mears worked as a writer for the Concord Free Press, was involved in the League of Women Voters and enjoyed participating in many productions with The Concord Players. Later she started a career in residential real estate as a broker with the Wintrop H. Lee Real Estate firm and then with Senkler Real Esate. She retired in 1992.
She was an avid reader of classic and current literature and was curious about all kinds of things, including New England antique furniture and print collecting, Asian needlepoint design and later in life, vegetable gardening. She loved working as a volunteer at the Concord Public Library, the Concord Community Chest and other Concord Organizations. She and her family worshipped at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Mears and her husband enjoyed the unique benefits of a life in Concord, which included many loving and kind life long friends, and a strong sense of community.
She is survived by her children, Sarah Mears of Peabody and F. Warren Mears of Maynard, many nieces and nephews and their families.
