Helen Claflin Spring

February 26, 1918 — November 19, 2017

Helen Claflin Spring, age 99, nicknamed "Haych" by her many friends, passed away November 19, 2017, with family by her side. She was born February 26, 1918 to William H Claflin and Helen (Atkins) Claflin in Belmont, MA.

She was a 1937 graduate of the Windsor School, and completed post-graduate studies in Florence from 1939 to 1940. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Helen worked as a nurse's aide from 1942 to 1944 at the Army's General Hospital in Waltham, MA. She met her future husband John during the war, and they married in October, 1945.

After living in New York a few years, she and John became residents of Concord for over 65 years. She was a volunteer at Emerson Hospital for 26 years from 1950 to 1976.

Haych was known to have a great sense of humor, with an independent point of view. She devoted her life to raising her family including grandchildren and great grandchildren. She traveled with her husband, and played golf and skied until age 87.

Haych became an avid downhill skier. In 1946 she taught her husband, John (raised in St. Louis), how to ski, when there were only rope tows. They enjoyed skiing and playing golf together throughout their lifetimes.

She adored her grandchildren and every summer devoted time to them at her cottage on Brant Point, Nantucket. One of her great loves was sailing. She enjoyed being at the helm of her Cat Boat and won many pennant races over the years in Nantucket harbor. She taught her children the art of sailing spending hours on the water with them.

Her hobby of many years was painting with watercolors. She was a member of the Concord Garden Club, the Ladies Tuesday Club, the Ladies Travel Club, the Colonial Dames of America, the Chilton Club, the Waterville Valley Black & Blue Trail Smashers Club, the Sankaty Head Golf Club, the Nantucket Yacht Club, and a life member of the Concord Country Club.

She was predeceased by her husband (age 97) John K. Spring, after 70 years of marriage. She and John were admired and respected for their life long devotion and love for one another. She also had two siblings predecease her: Anne C. Allen and William H. Claflin III.

She leaves behind 4 children: Nita Montero; John Spring Jr. (and his wife Debby); Bill Spring (and his wife Barbara); and Suzi Spring. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a sister Katharine C. Weeks.
