James Edward Trant

June 2, 1954 — May 6, 2025

Concord, Massachusetts

James Edward Trant, age 70, a long-time resident of Concord, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of the late Julie McTigue Trant, who preceded him in death in 2022.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 2, 1954, he was the eldest son of Joan Therese (Lomasney) Trant of Huntington, New York, and the late James Nicholas Trant. Jim was raised in Oaklawn, Illinois, until the age of 11, and then in Huntington, New York.

Jim excelled both academically and athletically throughout high school, earning multiple awards and recognitions in both. Upon graduating from Huntington High School, Jim began his college career at the United States Air Force Academy. After a career-changing injury while playing soccer at Air Force, Jim transferred to the University of Notre Dame, following in his father’s footsteps, and earning an undergraduate degree in Economics. He then moved to Boston to earn his Master’s degree in Marketing from Boston University. It was during this time in Jim’s life that he developed his fondness for the Boston area.

Jim met the love of his life, Julie McTigue, while both were living in New Jersey. They married in November 1983 and soon returned to Massachusetts, settling in Concord where they would live as husband and wife for 39 years. They happily made Concord their home, meeting countless friends along the way.

Jim worked for Digital Equipment Corporation for many years in their Product Services Division, delivering strategic financial services to domestic and global clients alike. Jim later worked for Kofax and 170 Systems.

Jim’s love of and for sports and music remained central to his core. He was an avid Red Sox fan, holding season tickets for many years. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States to attend NCAA Final Four championship games in basketball, as well as football and Lacrosse. Jim was also known to attend other sporting events such as the Kentucky Derby, the U.S. Olympics, and multiple PGA events. Jim’s passion for competitive sports extended well into his forties, playing softball, basketball, and in golf leagues throughout Concord and nearby towns. Jim and his teammates remained close for decades and would gather routinely for Boys Night Out (BNO) up until his passing. Always having the desire to remain engaged with sports and with Concord’s community, Jim covered boys and girls sports at Concord Carlisle High School, writing for the Concord Journal for many years. In addition, Jim’s passion for music was extensive, as he attended concerts all over the country and shared his rock 'n’ roll acumen with friends and family.

A kind and gentle soul, with a quick wit and engaging personality, Jim had a passion to engage with people, offering a compliment to a passerby, lending a hand to someone in need, or sharing his perspective when asked amongst his friends and family. A testament to the person he was and with the friends he made, he regularly met via Zoom with his fellow retired friends for their Beer Friday gatherings. Jim’s legacy of kindness, intelligence, generosity, and playfulness will be cherished and remembered by everyone who knew him, both lifelong friends and casual acquaintances.

Jim’s greatest love was Julie. The bond they shared was extraordinary. Always respectful of one another, selfless, caring, giving, and loving of the union they shared. The two are now reunited in eternity.

Along with his mother Joan, he is survived by his siblings: Kim Trant and husband John Garrison and their daughter Meredith, Sheila Trant, Joan Elizabeth Trant and husband John McNamara, and brother Kevin Trant and wife Madolyn and their children Cailyn and Declan; his brother-in-law Michael McTigue and wife Jenny and their daughters Harriet and Eleanor McTigue; and sister-in-law Megan Desjarlais and husband Robert.

Jim’s funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 10:30 am in Holy Family Parish, St. Bernard’s Church, Monument Square, Concord Center, Concord, MA. Interment will be private at a later date.
