Jane Carey Burke
April 28, 1929 — January 20, 2019
Jane Carey Burke age 89 of Wayland, MA, died peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, James Paul Burke, M.D. in 2005.
She is survived by her four children, Mary Elisabeth Burke (Enfield, CT), CatherineCarey Burke (Redondo Beach, CA) Jane Alden Burke (Boston, MA) and Carey James Burke (Nancy) of Atlanta, GA, her grandson, James Paul Burke (Atlanta, GA), her sister Mary Ellen Telfeian (Princeton, NJ), her brother Dan Carey (Ronnie) of Darien, CT and nine nieces and nephews. Jane graduated from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing (NY, NY) with a Diploma in Nursing (RN) in 1949. She went on to earn her B.S. degree from The College of Mount Saint Vincent, Riverdale, NY in 1951. She served as a nurse at Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, CT and Yale New Haven Hospital between 1951 and 1954.
After moving to Wayland in1954, Jane was very active in the Wayland and Concord communities as a member of the Wayland Swim & Tennis Club, and Wayland Garden Club, among other organizations. She was an advocate for the Wayland Public Schools, a member of the Wayland High School Parent Teacher Advisory Council, and an avid supporter of Wayland Athletic programs.
She served as a nurse for Concord Academy, Concord Academy Day Camp, The Fenn School in the 1980's and 1990's. She also served as assistant to the Director of Athletics at the Fenn School, retiring in 2007. In her later years she was an avid reader, and maintained an active interest in the arts, local history and college basketball.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Jane on Friday, January 25, 2019 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap St., Concord.
Her graveside service at North Cemetery in Wayland will be private.
