Joan Amy (Urlwin) Payne

October 2, 1916 — March 24, 2013

Joan Amy (Urlwin) Payne of Concord MA, age 96. Born on Oct 2nd 1916 in Ilford England, to Arthur and Helen Urlwin. She was never to know her father who became one of the many victims of the trench warfare of World War I. She leaves behind her beloved son Michael and his wife Frances, her grandchildren Christine Perkins, David Payne, Andrew Payne and Elizabeth Payne together her 5 great grandchildren Michael, Evelyn, Nathaniel, Ian and Eleri.

She grew up in England and after graduating from high school and Business College she worked for many years at the Prudential Assurance Company, which was housed in an historic red brick building on High Holborn in London. She later worked for the UK Government in the Home Office, processing the landing cards that visitors to the UK must complete. She immigrated to the United States in 1975 and worked for the Bank of New England as an accountant for 7 years before she retiring in 1982.

She enjoyed gardening and crafts, and belonged to several groups and clubs in Wakefield, including the Order of Eastern Star. She always enjoyed the annual Boston Flower Show. She loved line dancing and enjoyed giving demonstrations with the group. She enjoyed embroidery and left many examples of her fine work for her family to enjoy. Mrs. Payne was a resident in Newbury Court, Concord, and later in The Gardens at Newbury Court. She spent her last few weeks at the Parmenter Hospice in Wayland.

Funeral service, Mon. April 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Elm Street, Concord.
Interment will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
