Joan Susan Soule

June 2, 1928 — June 1, 2014

Joan Ross Dilley Soule of Concord, MA, spouse of the late Harold Browne Soule, mother, active community member and sportsman, died June 1, 2014 in Littleton MA. She was 85.

Born and raised in Eastbourne and the Lake District in England, Joan lived in Concord for much of her life. Joan graduated from Huyton Girls College and the London School of Economics, England and attended the University of California at Berkeley. She was a dedicated tennis player as a member of England's Wightman Cup team and a top twenty tennis player on the US Tennis Circuit winning many regional championships, often partnering with her twin sister, Andy Marshall. Joan was a Wimbledon Tournament and Forest Hills player. She rose from professional tennis player to professional tennis teacher of the young and not-so-young, on public and private courts throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Joan was an energetic and devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord, MA. For many years, Joan was an enthusiastic supporter and leader of the Alter Guild. During the 1960s and early 1970s, Joan joined civil rights marches in the Boston area and the Selma to Montgomery March in Alabama. She opened her home for extended periods to lodge Vietnamese and Laotian refugee families. Joan was a lover of dogs and bred German Shepherds and Labradors.

She is survived by her son Jonathan Soule, his wife Anne Soule and their two children Allison and Lucas of Braddock Heights, Maryland.

Family and friends are invited to attend Joan's life celebration on Saturday, September 6th at 10:00 am in the Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm St., Concord, MA.
