John Brown Ayer

March 13, 1962 — June 1, 2026

Sudbury, Massachusetts

John Brown Ayer, age 64 and resident of Sudbury, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, at his residence following a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the devoted husband to Deborah (Pazary) Ayer and loving father to Jennifer Ayer.

Born in Boston on March 13, 1962, he was the son of the late Alexander Ayer, Sr. and Alison (Gibson) Ayer. He was raised and early educated in Cohasset, MA. He later attended and graduated from Colby College in Maine with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and from Stanford Law School with a J.D. He then began a long and established career with Ropes & Gray LLP in Boston, retiring as Senior Partner, where he held various leadership roles, including co-head of the firm’s private equity industry group and head of the private investment funds group. John was a defining figure in the private equity funds landscape. His technical brilliance as a lawyer was surpassed only by his commitment to stewardship and mentoring at Ropes & Gray. A mentor to many, John had a profound effect on the careers of countless Ropes & Gray attorneys.

John and Deborah married on August 22, 1987, in the Lorimer Chapel at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. They settled into their family home in Sudbury, where Jennifer was born in 1996.

John was a member of Charter Oak Country Club, where he played golf for years. He loved to travel and took many trips with Debby and Jen as well as his chosen family of friends from his days at Colby. The most meaningful places to him were Hualalai on the Big Island of Hawaii and the Amalfi Coast in Italy, where he visited frequently.

John was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and watched games while sipping his favorite craft beer, Julius. Most days he could be found starting his day with a drive in his beloved Porsche 911. He appreciated a nice brunch or dinner out and could always be counted on to find the latest renowned restaurant. John cherished time with his family and will be greatly missed.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Ayer, and her husband, Joris Cipi; his siblings, Alexander Ayer Jr. and Jillian Ayer; and many friends and colleagues.

Family and friends will gather to honor and remember John for visiting hours on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap Street, Concord, MA. His funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 11:00 am. Burial will be private.
