John M. Buchanan

John M. Buchanan, Sr., age 84 of Concord, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 at his home. He was the husband of Patricia (Eveleth) Buchanan.

Born in Washington, D. C. on March 30, 1923, he was the son of the late Frank A. and Ora Mae (Brown) Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia. He continued his studies as an ensign in the U. S. Navy and, in 1948, earned an MSEE from the California Institute of Technology. He was an associate director and program manager at MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory, later the C. S. Draper Laboratory, in Bedford for many years. In the mid-seventies he worked with Citizens for Rail Transportation in an effort to improve mass transit operations. Subsequently he was a solar system designer and engineer with MassDesign and a product development supervisor for Solar Thermal Systems. He retired from Textron in 1994.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Buchanan is survived by a son, John, Jr. and his wife Jill of Watertown, daughters, Lisa Bryant and her husband Gary of Baltimore, Maryland and Nancy Doberman and her husband Eric of Cambridge. He is also survived by three grandsons, his brother Frank, Jr. of Santa Maria, California, his sister Bobbye Pangle of�Richmond, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews.
