John Joseph Flynn Jr, 84 of Concord, passed away on November 18, 2021, at home under hospice care.
He was born in Framingham, MA on November 16, 1937, to John and Edna (Lavallee) Flynn. He was the beloved husband of Kathryn Elizabeth (Kellogg) for 55 years. He was the loving father of Karen Flynn Gaffney and her husband Kevin of Andover, and Sean and his wife Maureen of Acton, and the late Judith E. Hardy. He was predeceased by his sisters Jean Kashian and Gail Benzmiller. He was the adoring grandfather of Maeve, Ryan and Lizzie Gaffney, and Ellie, Liam and Delaney Flynn. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. John was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Family was always at the center of his life.
John was a 1955 graduate of Framingham High School. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1959 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and received his masters from Northeastern in 1968. He worked for NASA and Martin Marietta early in his career where he did research on space craft reentry. He spent the bulk of his career at Dow Chemical where his research focused on mass spectroscopy and single crystal x-ray spectroscopy. His career also included several years at WR Grace and the Truesdale Company.
Upon his retirement, he drove antique cars for weddings and worked at Mt Cranmore, where his family had a vacation home for over 30 years. He loved to read, ski and play golf. When ski season ended, he could be found on the golf course with his favorite partners, his grandchildren. He liked to plant and grow trees and enjoyed working in their annual garden. He also appreciated his time over the past 5 years spent delivering for Meals on Wheels and was always there to give words of wisdom and encouragement and share in others' joys and celebrations.
John will be remembered for his hilarious stories, his fantastic Boston accent, and his infectious laugh. Once you were John's friend, you were a friend for life.
