Lois B. Mercer

Lois B. (Haley) Mercer died March 15, 2010 in Concord. She was the wife of the late James R. Mercer, Jr. of Concord. They were married for 63 years.

Born in Reading on April 12, 1912 she was the daughter of the late William A. and Margaret (Flint) Haley. Her only sibling, Wilma Haley Totty, died in 1980.

Mrs. Mercer attended the local schools and graduated from Reading High School in 1929. She attended Cambridge School of Physical Therapy and at one time used her training at Children’s Hospital on Children’s Island located just outside Marblehead harbor.

An avid reader and gardener, she also loved to knit and was never without needle-point, embroidery or pieces of crochet in her hands.

A greatly beloved mother, she leaves four children, James R. Mercer III and his wife, Lee, of Cape Coral, FL, Betsey M. Rockett of Reading, Loel A. Poor and her husband, Mike, of Boxford and Paul W. Mercer and his wife, Laura, of Wickford, RI.

There are 11 grandchildren (and spouses) who experienced their Nana’s love and care all of their lives, and 27 great-grandchildren who called her “Nana Lady”, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. There are many nieces and nephews who were very fond of her.

Mrs. Mercer was a member of the Trinitarian Congregation Church in Concord for 49 years.
