Maxine Slater Bretnall

Maxine Slater Bretnall, 87, of Carlisle, formerly of Greenville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Grainger Bretnall, who died in 2002.

Maxine Slater was born, raised, and early educated in Norwich, New York, the daughter of the late Maurice and Hazel (Reiben) Slater. 

She later attended and graduated from Katharine Gibbs School in New York City and worked for many years in Library Services.

Maxine and Walter married and settled in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was a devoted wife and loving mother to her two children. The family moved from Rochester, NY, to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1972. In her free time, she enjoyed volunteering at the hospital, bowling, knitting, reading, baking, walking her dog, and checking in on neighbors. 

She is survived by her son Jay W. Bretnall of Greenville, NC, her daughter Lori Canavan, and her husband David of Carlisle, MA.  She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Ericka Igoe, and her husband, Stephen Igoe, Kelsey, Brendon, and Colleen Canavan.

Services for Maxine will be private.
