Myrtle M. (Litchfield) Kennedy

October 28, 1920 — July 13, 2015

Myrtle M. (Litchfield) Kennedy age 94 of Concord passed away on Monday, July 13, surrounded by her loving family at the Wilmington Health Care Center in Wilmington, MA. She was the wife of the late John T. Kennedy.

A resident of Concord, MA for 55 years, Myrt was born to Guy B. and Ethel C. (Turner) Litchfield on October 28, 1920 at home in Newton, MA.

Myrt met her future husband, John T. Kennedy, in Boston. When Johnny was deployed overseas by the U.S. Army to fight in World War II, Myrt enlisted in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and was sent to Miami, FL, where she served as a secretary. Johnny returned when the war ended and they were married on November 21, 1945. Their daughter, Dianne, was born in 1946, and their son, Jack, followed in 1947. After living in Waltham, MA, they moved to Concord, MA in 1958. Myrt and Johnny were happily married for over 61 years until he passed away in 2007.

During her married life, Myrt enjoyed a fulfilling career working at Raytheon, then as secretary to the superintendent of schools in Concord, and finished her career at Hayes Pump in Concord. Myrt and Johnny enjoyed many years in retirement volunteering, traveling, and spending time with their beloved grandchildren. Myrt was a talented amateur artist who took lessons locally. She was a prolific painter and her landscapes are prized by family and friends. An excellent seamstress, she sewed the uniforms Johnny wore as a Concord Minuteman, and the gowns she wore as a Minuteman's wife. Myrt was skilled at knitting, crocheting, and making beautiful hand-sewn quilts. She made lovely ceramics, and created and collected porcelain dolls. Myrt was devoted to her family, enjoyed a wide circle of friends and had a great sense of humor. She was a very special person who will be missed by many.

Myrt leaves her two children, Dianne Kennedy of Reading, MA and Jack Kennedy and his wife Joanne of Portland, ME and four grandchildren, Heather Wolsey and her husband Craig Hovey of Beverly, Brooke Faulkner and her husband Bryan Faulkner of Haverhill, John Kennedy III of Portland, ME and Matt Kennedy and his wife Kate of Chandler, AZ. Myrt also leaves four great-grandchildren, Riley and Casey Faulkner and Evelyn and Ethan Kennedy. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Bernard Litchfield and Francis Litchfield, and her twin sister Marian, who died at birth.

At Myrt's request, there will be no visiting hours. Friends and family are invited to a graveside service, held with U.S. Navy Military Honors on Thursday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, 361 Bedford St., Concord.

Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Thursday in honor of Myrt's service to her country during WWII for the United States Navy.
