Nancy Chivvis Quackenbush

Nancy Chivvis Quackenbush, age 91, died on February 25, 2008�at The Inn at Robbins Brook in Acton, Massachusetts.

She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 23, 1916 to Leland Chivvis and Mary Branch Glasgow. Nancy graduated from Mary Institute in St. Louis, as valedictorian of her class.�She was awarded a scholarship to Vassar College and graduated in 1939 with an A.B. in history.

On September 27, 1941 she married Arthur David Quackenbush, Jr. of Mobile, Alabama, the son of Arthur David Quackenbush and Lillian Tonsmeire.

The couple lived in several states before moving to North Plainfield, New Jersey, where Nancy taught high school history and social studies for over 20 years. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Plainfield, where she taught Sunday School and was active in numerous church committees. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Plainfield YMCA and was an active member of the North Plainfield League of Women Voters and the New Jersey Education Association. In 1974 she was elected to the North Plainfield Board of Education.

In 1989 Nancy and her husband moved to Concord, Massachusetts, where they were active members of Trinity Episcopal Church. Nancy was elected to the Concord School Committee in 1990.

In addition to her husband of 66 years, she is survived by a sister, Sarah Willcockson of St. Louis, Missouri, two sons, Carr Lane Quackenbush of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Schuyler Quackenbush of Westfield, New Jersey, and two daughters, Nancy Rubsam of Poughkeepsie, New York and Ellen Quackenbush of Concord, Massachusetts. She has nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
