Robert M. Barrett

August 16, 1926 — December 22, 2012

Robert M. Barrett (Bobby B.) (WA1ZJG) 86 of Harvard formerly of Nantucket passed away Saturday December 22, 2012 at Emerson Hospital in Concord after complications from the flu. He was the husband of Alda O. (Brown) Barrett

Born in Nantucket on August 16, 1926 the son of Chester Smith Barrett and Marguerite M. (Manter) Barrett.
Robert was raised in Nantucket and was drafted in 1944 during World War II and served 15 months in the Army Asia Pacific Technical Operations (APTO) as a radio repairman in the Philippines with the 4025th Signal Service Group. After his service he studied watch repair at the Mass Trade Shops Schools in Boston. In 1950 he started a career with Raytheon in Bedford as a machinist. In 1951 he married, and started building his home in Harvard. By around 1963 he started a long career at General Radio (GenRad) in Concord as an experimental machinist and welder. He retired from GenRad in 1990.

His interests were to numerous to list, but included building most any conceivable mechanical, or electrical device. He was inspired by the Harvard Museum of Natural History glass flower collection to take up glass blowing and made his own glass flowers. He was an active amateur radio operator and hosted the Harvard repeater. He was an avid photographer and his digital photo collection contains approximately 57,000 photos.

Besides his wife he is survived by his son Jeffrey B. Barrett and his wife Robin of Bolton, granddaughter Marguerite Lynne Barrett, and brother Chester S. Barrett Jr. of Nantucket.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. in the Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap St., Concord.

A memorial service in Nantucket will be held in April 2013 at at time, date and location to be announced.

A memorial scholarship in Robert's name will be announced.
