Robert M. Lydiard, age 77 of Bedford, MA formerly of Acton and Concord, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was the husband of the late Beverly June Wallace Lydiard.
Born in Boston on October 22, 1930, he was the son of the late Clifford M. and Henrietta M. (Willhauck) Lydiard.
Mr. Lydiard was a graduate of Boston Latin School, Class of 1948, and attended Boston University on a ROTC scholarship, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Marketing. He joined the Debating and Marketing Society, and was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, a national scholastic honorary fraternity. Mr. Lydiard was also a member of the National Society of Pershing Rifles, Bravo Company Twelfth Regiment. Upon graduation, he accepted his ROTC commission in the United States Air Force and served as Second Lieutenant for five years in Air Force Intelligence in Europe during the Korean War.
Mr. Lydiard returned home, soon married, and began his career in corporate accounting and financial administration. He was Controller and Assistant Treasurer in various high technology companies and at theFirst Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston. He later received a Masters of Arts degree from Framingham State College and was certified to become a School Business Administrator. He worked in that capacity for the Pentucket Regional School District, then at Joseph P. Keefe Technical School in Framingham, MA. He was also a member of the Massachusetts Association of School Business Officials.
Mr. Lydiard and his family made their home in Acton, where they raised their three children before moving to West Concord. In their retirement, they enjoyed a vacation home in Onset, MA. Mr. Lydiard was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Concord, for 48 years and held many positions in the church during that time. He was also a longtime member of First Church of Christ Scientist, Boston.
In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family, and sailing. He also loved cars, especially his old Mercedes. One of his favorite pastimes was to tell jokes, and he often came up with witty one-liners, keeping his friends and family on their toes. For instance, hearing it was cool outside would elicit the "Judge's Weather Report" - "fine today, cooler tomorrow." His dry wit and wisdom will be missed.
He is survived by his children, Joy L. Hartwell of North Reading, Ross M. Lydiard of Walnut Creek, CA, and Hugh W. Lydiard of Washington, D.C., his grandchildren, Wesley E. and Darren A.
