Russell S. Hatch age 92 of Groton, MA. formerly of Concord, MA. passed away on Monday, July 20, 2009 at Keystone Center in Leominster, MA.. He was the loving husband of the late Hilda M. (Butcher) Hatch. He is survived by his three sons, Steven W. Hatch from Sterling, Gary A. Hatch and his wife Linda (Glass) from Townsend and Russell D. Hatch and his wife Cheryl from Sterling and a sister, Ruth Flannigan of CA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Cambridge on April 1, 1917 he was the son of the late Clarence H. and Vesta G. (Stimpson) Hatch. Raised and educated in Cambridge, he graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School.
Russell enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was a pharmacist’s mate on the USS Pittsburg.
Upon his return home he married Hilda M. Butcher in 1946. They built a home in Concord and lived there throughout their marriage.
Russell worked for many years at General Radio in Concord and Bolton. He was active in the General Radio picnics, minstrel shows, bird watchers group and baseball team.
He shared his love of music with everyone, and always had a song to sing and share everywhere he went. He enjoyed playing his saxophone. He was proud of the record he and his brothers along with Lloyd Bickford cut as a gift to their dad singing barbershop music. The quartet group, The Conchordians sang for many.
Rusell and Hilda were active members of the West Concord Union Church where he participated in many church functions. He sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school, enjoyed and hosted church picnics, acted as treasurer and started the current Fellowship Group for Challenged Adults. He and Hilda also were instrumental in hosting a Cambodian family into Concord through the church. They shared a special bond with the family.
His service to his church and community was extensive. He was a volunteer for the Concord organization F.I.S.H. Often Russell would come through as the one willing to drive a person in need into Boston. An avid Red Sox fan, Russ was always known to watch or listen to every game he could. His love of the game moved him to coach little league in Concord for many years as well as a Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the Acton Square Wheelers Square Dance Club for many years and enjoyed traveling with friends from the group. He loved to travel with his family, camping across America while the boys were young. Later they summer vacationed at Lakeside Pines in Bridgeton ME. along with several relatives.
Russell was a loving husband and father and friend that created many memories with his children, grandchildren and great grand children and all who met him.
Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff in honor of Mr. Hatch's service to his country in the United States Navy during WWII.
