Werner "Fritz" S. Willmann

Werner "Fritz" S., Willmann age 83, of Lincoln and Annisquam died January 23, 2015 after a long illness.

He grew up in Belmont and Cambridge, graduating in 1949 from the Belmont Hill School and Harvard College, Class of 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era and after his discharge in 1955 he took an engineering course at Harvard which resulted in his life long interest in computers.

He began his employment in 1957 at Remington Rand in Boston working with the Univac 1 computer. When the Sperry Research Center (later Unisys Corp.) opened in Sudbury in 1961 he was hired as a scientific programmer and later became manager of the programming and computation department until the lab closed in 1984. He then worked at M.I.T Lincoln Laboratories until his retirement.

Fritz had many hobbies and interests, including woodworking, violin repair, sailing, tennis, golf, bird watching, squash, billiards, table tennis, bridge, and poker. Playing pool with his friends at the Bedford COA was a big part of his life after retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Margaret(Peggy)Martin Willmann, daughter Jennifer H. of Oakland, CA, son Eric S. of Bedford, daughter Heidi Richards and her husband Tony of Northbridge NSW, Australia, grandsons Nathan and Sam Richards, sister Hildegarde Wilson of Berkeley, CA, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Peter A. Willmann.
